Like any cancer, the location and stage of liver tumors
determine the most effective treatment. Commonly, these options
may include any combination of surgery to resect the liver,
chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Ireland Cancer Center
physicians have also found radiofrequency ablation—a technique
that combines MRI technology with radiofrequency waves—to be
effective in destroying tumors localized to the liver.
At the Ireland Cancer Center, physicians and scientists are
continually investigating new options for treating liver tumors.
Ireland physicians are exploring whether the use of cryosurgery
("freezing" of the tumor) can eradicate these cancers.
Researchers at the Ireland Cancer Center are also probing the
potential use of gene therapy to repair damaged tumor suppressor
genes.
