OTHER DEPARTMENTAL AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

NUTRITION SERVICES

The Ireland Cancer Center provides registered dieticians who specialize in oncology. The dieticians assist patients with practical and scientific answers to questions or concerns about diet, supplements or other products that could be used to manage symptoms during treatment and through survivorship. Nutrition services are part of University Hospitals of Cleveland’s many support services provided to patients.

SOCIAL SERVICES

Social work services are available to all patients treated in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Social workers recognize that living with cancer can be overwhelming. The social worker provides counseling and emotional support for patients and their families. Further, the social worker can help problem solve practical aspects of care such as transportation, prescription coverage and referrals for legal and financial assistance. In addition, social workers coordinate and facilitate patient/family education by offering classes which are held in comfortable and private areas in the Department of Radiation Therapy. Some of the topics of these group meetings have been art therapy, music therapy, pain and fatigue control and nutrition.

RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAM

The Radiation Oncology Residency Program at University Hospitals of Cleveland / Case Western Reserve University is an ACGME accredited four year training program. Residents rotate with each of the faculty members on a three-month basis. The department in conjunction with CASE School of Medicine sponsors pre-clinical and clinical electives for medical students with an interest in radiotherapy. Residents gain experience with traditional, 3-D conformal, and IMRT treatment planning, as well as Gamma Knife radiosurgery, brachytherapy and intraoperative radiotherapy. Residents in the program are allowed 6 months for research as a senior resident. For more information please click here.
