DIVISION OF MEDICAL PHYSICS & DOSIMETRY

The Medical Physics and Dosimetry Division of the Department of the Radiation Oncology has grown to keep pace with the expansion of services at University Hospitals of Cleveland as well as providing comprehensive physics and dosimetry support to multiple satellite facilities. The development and implementation of new treatment technologies has also contributed to the growth of the Division. Presently, ten medical physicists, nine dosimetrists, computer network managers, several engineers, research associates, graduate and dosimetry student work to meet the clinical and educational standards of this seven treatment center, system-wide operation.

Responsibilities of the Physics Section include support for clinical treatment activities on three linear accelerators at the main campus and seven treatment machines at the satellite facilities. Physics also oversees external treatment planning, gamma knife radiosurgery, high and low dose rate brachytherapy, intravascular brachytherapy, intra-operative radiation therapy, total body and total skin irradiation, research activities and departmental network support. Members of the Physics group are actively involved in the development and implementation of new technologies for clinical use. Current programs include Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image Fusion, Photodynamic Therapy and Targeted Radionuclide Therapy.

The Dosimetry Section provides Treatment Planning services for the Department using the ADAC Pinnacle 3D Treatment Planning computer. Utilizing this state of the art technology, Dosimetrists construct 3 Dimensional Conformal plans that deliver highly defined doses of radiation to the volume prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist. Another tool used in the planning process is the Image Fusion technology that allows additional diagnostic information to be used in target volume definition. This fusion, or combining of images, uses the treatment planning CT scan as the foundation of the plan and brings other studies into the process. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) studies are used to give the most accurate definition of the target volume thereby yielding the most accurate plan possible. Members of the Dosimetry section are actively involved in the IMRT and Image Fusion programs.

The Department of Radiation Oncology sponsors a Dosimetrist Training Program, which starts every January. The enrollment is limited to two students per year and applications for the coming year must be submitted by September 15 to be considered. Each student receives a stipend and upon completion of the program is eligible to sit for the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Exam. For more information, please contact the Administrative Director of Dosimetry at 216-844-1973.
